Sweden: Ruling Social Democrats to decide on NATO issue by May 24

Sweden’s ruling Social Democrats announced today that they intend to reach a decision on a possible NATO bid by May 24th.

“We are currently consulting on security policy within our party (…). This dialogue is expected to be completed by May 12 and then we will begin our decision-making process,” said party Secretary Tobias Boudin. in a written announcement.

The final decision will be made before the next meeting of the party leadership, scheduled for May 24, he added.

The center-left Social Democrats, led by Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson, have so far been historically opposed to joining NATO and reaffirmed their position at the party’s last congress in November, but the war in Ukraine has sparked the issue in Sweden and within the party.
