Sweden’s security service has launched an investigation into the drone strikes of more than three of the country’s nuclear plants on Friday, according to a statement issued today.
Police in Sweden deployed patrols and helicopters at the Forsmark nuclear plant to track down a drone that was seen flying over the factory on Friday, but failed to catch the unmanned vehicle.
Police said the drone was large in size and could fly despite strong winds blowing at the Forsmark unit.
In addition, the Security Service announced today that unmanned aircraft were also seen at two other nuclear plants, in Oskarsamn and Ringhall. About 30% of Sweden’s total energy production is covered by these three units.
The incidents came a day after the Swedish army began patrolling the island city of Gotland, in the Baltics, amid growing tensions between NATO and Russia and a recent deployment of a Russian landing craft in the Baltic.
“In general, security threats against Sweden have increased with a broader and deeper threat in the field of information and a more complex picture of threats,” the Security Service said in a statement.
