Sweden signs formal application for NATO membership and awaits Finland

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde signed a request on Tuesday morning (17) declaring the country’s intention to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The move marks a formal step by the Swedish government to join the US-led military alliance – ending decades of military neutrality – as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggers a dramatic evolution in European security and geopolitics.

“It feels very big, very serious, and it looks like we’ve come to a conclusion that is best for Sweden,” said Linde. “We don’t know how long it will take, but we estimate it could take up to a year.”

“This week, this application will be submitted, together with Finland, in a day or two, and then it will be processed by NATO,” said Linde.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Monday that the country should join NATO along with neighboring Finland to “ensure the safety of the Swedish people”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the two Nordic countries’ entry into the alliance will not create a threat to Russia, but military expansion into the territory “will certainly cause our response”.
