Sweden’s new Social Democrat leader, Magdalena Anderson, was instructed today to form a government and secure parliamentary support to become the first woman to take over as prime minister following the ouster of Stephen Leven.
As expected, House Speaker Andreas Norlen gave the order to Anderson after consulting with parliamentary party leaders.
The incumbent Finance Minister has until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (Greek time) – or to ask for more time to try to secure sufficient support to form a government.
If Anderson manages to garner enough support by Tuesday, her appointment as head of government could be put to a parliamentary vote on November 18, Norlen said.
To win the support of Parliament, the 54-year-old economist must secure the support of her environmental allies, but also of two parties with often divergent interests: the Left Party and the Center Party.
Shortly before the announcement of Stephen Leven’s resignation on Wednesday, the leader of the Center, Annie Leef, said that her party would not vote against Magdalena Anderson, after reaching an agreement with the Social Democrats and environmentalists.
Anderson said today that she would begin consultations with the leader of the Left Party, Nusi Dandgostar.
The latter specifically calls for an increase in pensions.
In order to become Prime Minister of Sweden, a candidate must not vote against an absolute majority (175 seats out of 349) in Parliament.
In case of four failures in the efforts to form a majority, early elections are called within three months.
