The thriller continues with the formation of a government in Sweden, after yesterday’s fruitless efforts by center-left and center-right parties and the Prime Minister, Stephen Leven, to resign. The leader of the Social Democrats lost the motion of censure against him last week and so his country entered a vicious circle.
Leven has led a fragile minority alliance with the Greens since 2018 and relied on the support of two small center-right parties and the Left Party to stay in power. It took four months to form government after the elections three years ago, in which no faction secured autonomy.
So after all that, Sweden’s Conservative leader Ulf Christerson has been tasked with forming a government, by Parliament Speaker Andreas Noren.
It remains to be seen whether Sweden will move to the right in the wake of this political crisis of the last two weeks. The scenario remains hypothetical. The parliamentary forces remain about the same as they were in 2018-19, when Leven took four months to form a government.
Christerson, the first moderate leader to say he was ready to ally with Sweden’s far-right Democrats (SD), had been instructed to do so, but failed to do so.

Together with the far right and the other two small right-wing parties (Liberals and Christian Democrats), the Moderates will have 173 seats, two less than they need.
In the event that Christerson fails to form a government, Leven may be re-appointed. After four failed attempts, early parliamentary elections will be called within three months.
