Sweden to decide on possible NATO bid by May 24

The ruling Social Democrats in Sweden announced today that they intend to reach a decision on a possible candidacy of their country in NATO until May 24th.

“We are currently consulting on security policy within our party (…). “This dialogue is expected to be completed by May 12 and then we will begin our decision-making process,” said party Secretary Tobias Boudin in a written statement.

The final decision will be made before the next meeting of the party leadership, scheduled for May 24, he added.

The center-left Social Democrats, led by Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson, have so far been historically opposed to joining NATO and reaffirmed their position at the party’s last congress in November, but the war in Ukraine has sparked the issue in Sweden and within the party.

Sweden has not been involved in a war since the time of Napoleon and has built its security policy on “non-participation in military alliances”
