A Swedish citizen pleaded guilty to charges of securities fraud, the use of electronic funds and the theft of more than $ 16 million in cryptocurrency from 3,500 people.
Roger Nils-Jones Karlsson communicated with his victims, luring them into investing in various bogus cryptocurrency schemes, according to a US Department of Justice statement. He admitted that between November 2012 and June 2019, he defrauded at least 3,575 victims worth more than $ 16 million.
Carlsson worked under several pseudonyms, using his company Eastern Metal Securities website to advertise an investment in a “pre-funded retirement plan” at $ 98 a share. Under this plan, investors were to receive a payment of 1.15 kg of gold per share.
Carlsson’s arrest in Thailand in June 2019 was followed by his extradition to the United States, and he was charged the following month. Each charge of fraud and money laundering carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and fines of up to $ 250,000 and $ 500,000, respectively.
Recall that last month, the US prosecutor’s office accused a Serbian citizen of $ 70 million in cryptocurrency fraud, and the UK police, with the support of Europol, arrested eight suspects of SIM card fraud. The group stole $ 100 million worth of fiat currencies and crypto assets.
