Swedish Defense Minister: NATO membership will strengthen Scandinavian defense

The defense capabilities of the Nordic countries will be strengthened if Sweden and Finland join NATO, a fact that will allow joint defense planning within the framework of the Alliance, the Swedish Minister of Defense said today, speaking on Swedish radio.

“(If Sweden and Finland join NATO) the result will be to use each other’s power and advantages and complement each other, but also to carry out business planning,” said Peter Hulkvist, a member of the ruling Socialist Party.

“In this case, the result is that we will become stronger together. This is something that can happen if we choose to join NATO,” the minister told public radio.

Sweden already has defense agreements with its Scandinavian neighbors.

The Social Democrats will decide on May 15 whether to remove the party’s decades-long opposition to the country joining NATO, a move that will almost certainly lead the country to seek membership in the 30-member Alliance.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has prompted a review of security policy in Sweden and Finland.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto is expected to announce his support for such a request this week.

Hulkvist, who has long been skeptical of Sweden’s accession to NATO, declined to comment in the interview about his current stance on the issue.

Denmark, Norway and Iceland are already members of NATO.
