Sweden’s foreign minister, Tobias Billström, described as “disgusting” the Islamophobic provocations, on the occasion of the burning of the Koran by a far-right activist near the Turkish embassy, amid protests linked to the Nordic country’s NATO accession process.
“Sweden has an extensive freedom of expression, but that does not mean that the Swedish government or I myself support the views expressed,” Billström said in a post on Twitter.
These events have angered Turkey, which has blocked both Sweden’s and Finland’s bids to join NATO.
Turkey announced today that it has canceled the planned visit of the Swedish defense minister, after the Swedish authorities allowed the anti-Turkish demonstration to take place in Stockholm.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said earlier today that he hoped the Swedish authorities would not allow the rally to take place and also argued that the protest could not be based on freedom of expression.
