The suffocating heat wave that hit Brazil during the week continues this Saturday (16), according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). According to the institute, at least five states remain on high danger alert for the strong heat: Paraná, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
In addition to the warning for the heat wave, Inmet also announces that practically the entire southern region of the country is in danger due to heavy rains and storms. Mainly the southwest and central regions of Rio Grande do Sul, where, in addition to storms, there is also a warning for the accumulation of rain.
These announcements characterize periods of rain between 30 and 60 mm/h or 50 and 100 mm/day, intense winds (up to 100 km/h) and hail. There are risks of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling trees and flooding, according to Inmet.
What to do?
According to Inmet, in situations of storms and accumulations of rain, these are the main recommendations:
- Turn off electrical appliances, general power supply
- Observe changes in the slopes
- Stay in a sheltered place
- In case of flooding, or similar, protect your belongings from the water by wrapping them in plastic bags.
- In case of gusts of wind: (do not take shelter under trees, as there is a risk of falling and electrical discharges and do not park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs).
- Get more information from the Civil Defense (phone 199) and the Fire Department (phone 193).
