The entity that governs the swimming world championship, Fina, voted this Sunday (19) to restrict the participation of athletes transgender in elite women’s competitions and to create a working group to establish an “open” category for them in some events as part of their new policy.
The decision was taken during the extraordinary general congress of Fina on the sidelines of the world championship in Budapest, in Hungary after members heard a report from a transgender task force comprised of leading medical, legal and sporting figures.
The new policy will require trans contestants to complete their transition by age 12 in order to compete in women’s tournaments.
The policy was approved with a majority of approximately 71% after being presented to members of 152 voting national federations who gathered for congress at the Puskas Arena.
