Swiss ‘veto’ on Denmark’s request to send Swiss-made armor to Ukraine

The Swiss government has vetoed Denmark’s request to send armored personnel carriers to Switzerland, citing its policy of neutrality, which does not supply arms to war zones, Swiss radio station SR reported today.

The Swiss State Agency for Economic Affairs (SECO) has rejected Denmark’s request to supply Ukraine with about 20 Piranha III armored vehicles, the SRF reported, citing SECO confirmation, which was not immediately available for comment.

Neutral Switzerland requires foreign countries that buy Swiss weapons to apply for re-export permits.

In April, it vetoed the re-export of Swiss-made munitions used in anti-aircraft tanks sent by Germany to Ukraine.

It has also rejected Poland’s request to send weapons to neighboring Ukraine.

Switzerland has abandoned its old tactics and adopted EU sanctions aimed at punishing Russia for invading Ukraine.

But Swiss neutrality is facing its biggest test in decades as a public debate over the interpretation of the policy that kept Switzerland in the midst of both world wars in the 20th century is under way.
