Switzerland: 2,000 people quarantined after two Omicron cases at school

About 2,000 people, including 1,600 children, were quarantined after two cases of the Omicron variant were discovered at one of the facilities of the prestigious Ecole internationale de Genève, the Swiss health authorities announced today.

“These two cases had a close family relationship with a person who was diagnosed positive and returned from a trip to South Africa,” said the health authorities in the canton of Vaud, where the private school is located, and the canton of Geneva in a joint statement. .

According to authorities, “this is the first measure of this magnitude”, after Omicron’s presence in Switzerland was confirmed this week.

“So far we have not noticed any infections in the wider area of Geneva or Boe. This element forces us today, for precautionary reasons, to decide to impose strict measures,” the authorities explain.

“It is necessary to curb the introduction of the variant into our territories. When it is recorded, it is also necessary to reduce, as much as possible, the transmission to Switzerland,” they emphasize.

The quarantine will last 10 days and students as well as teachers at the Satnière facility near Geneva will have to undergo a PCR test. These facilities host an elementary school and a high school.

Their families should also be screened as part of the Omicron variant survey, which was first recorded in South Africa in late November and has since been identified in dozens of countries.
