Switzerland: Authorities will destroy more than 620,000 expired vaccines of Moderna

Switzerland will destroy more than 620,000 expired vaccine doses of Moderna COVID-19, health officials said, as demand for the vaccine plummeted.

“It has been consciously accepted that under certain circumstances, supplies of vaccines were too large for the needs of Switzerland,” said a spokesman for the Federal Office of Public Health, confirming the information transmitted by the RTS network. “The aim is to protect the population in Switzerland continuously with sufficient quantities of the most effective vaccines available.”

Switzerland, which has halted public health measures aimed at halting the spread of the disease, has secured a total of 34 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine by 2022 for a population of about 8.7 million.

The country announced in February that it would offer up to 15 million surplus installments to poorer countries by mid-year. Exactly how many installments can actually be offered remains under discussion.

Switzerland said in March it had secured at least 14 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine for 2023 from Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna, with the right to double the order. You will also receive up to one million installments from another supplier.

Just over 70% of the population has received at least one dose in Switzerland and the neighboring principality of Liechtenstein. Authorities have recorded nearly 3.7 million COVID cases and 13,325 deaths.
