Switzerland: Finally men’s underwear for women in the army

Switzerland is moving in a more feminine direction and will allow women who are permanent members of the army to wear women’s underwear, says Guardian.

According to the current system, the uniform given to the conscripts includes only men underwear which are extremely inconvenient for them. The test is expected to take place next month and will include two different sets of lingerie, one for the hot and one for the cold months.

It is a move for the first time, in an effort to encourage more women to be military. Women make up about 1% of the Swiss Armed Forces, and the country hopes to increase that to 10% by 2030.

Marianne Binder, a member of the Swiss National Council, notes that the offer of women in more suitable underwear is in the right direction. “Military uniforms are designed for men, but if the military wants to accept more women, appropriate measures must be taken,” he said.

Swiss military spokesman Kay-Gunnar Sivert said the new, more functional lingerie for women would be short-sleeved for summer and long-sleeved for winter.

Sivert said other changes to the army supplies were being considered, such as combat clothing, protective vests and backpacks. “We will focus on application and functionality,” he said, adding that sizes have been limited so far.

Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd welcomed the move, saying “gender compatibility urgently needs to be improved”.
