Switzerland: Government orders more coronavirus vaccines

Switzerland will order more doses of Covid-19 vaccine, the government announced today as it tightens restrictions due to the pandemic, but has chosen not to adopt – for the time being – an even stricter and more restrictive lockdown.

The health authorities will order 7 million doses from Moderna and as many from Pfizer and BioNTech for the second half of next year, increasing their stock to 34 million doses by 2022 and ensuring that anyone can be vaccinated.

After consulting with regional authorities, the federal government announced that it would extend from Monday the requirement for a coronavirus vaccination or recovery certificate to access many indoor areas, such as restaurants.

For nightclubs such as discos and bars where no masks can be worn, guests should also show a negative test.

The measures, which run until January 24, reinstate compulsory work from home and limit private gatherings to 10 people if someone aged 16 and over has not been vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19.

The cabinet warned last week that it may need to impose a partial lockdown to curb the rise in coronavirus cases that threaten to flood the healthcare system and have alarmed other European countries.

One week before the start of the main winter sports season, ski resorts were watching to see how the government handled the situation.

Vaccination is not mandatory now to get on the elevators, where passengers must wear masks in closed cabins.

The government today extended until the end of 2022 financial assistance to companies that lose revenue from health restrictions. It provides an additional 1.7 billion Swiss francs ($ 1.85 billion) for the program and said vaccinations would remain free for the population.

Switzerland and its small neighbor Liechtenstein have reported nearly 1.2 million Covid-19 infections – 13.5% of the population – and more than 11,500 deaths from the disease since the pandemic broke out last year.

Two in three residents are fully vaccinated, including three-quarters of the population aged 12 and over, but vaccine resistance remains. Officials did not rule out the possibility of vaccination becoming mandatory in case of emergency.

More than 80% of ICU beds are covered.
