Switzerland has set a voluntary 15% gas savings target for the winter as Europe faces potential gas shortages as a result of the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
As Switzerland is completely dependent on gas imports, a European shortage would have an immediate impact and make it more difficult to buy gas supplies from abroad, the government said in a statement on Wednesday.
Some Western leaders have accused Russia of using the standoff over a turbine for the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline as a pretext to cut energy supplies in response to sanctions imposed on Moscow over its incursion into Ukraine.
Switzerland aims to use 15% less natural gas compared to the average consumption of the past five years, from October 2022 to March 2023, according to the statement.
