Switzerland is facing the 5th wave of the coronavirus, but is not taking any new measures

The Swiss Minister of Health has currently ruled out new restrictive measures to deal with the 5th wave of the pandemic, while the daily infections quadrupled in one month and reached their highest level for 2021.

“We are clearly facing the fifth wave,” federal health adviser Alain Bershe admitted today during a press conference.

“The future of the pandemic” will depend on everyone’s behavior, “he warned,” but hoped that progress could be made with existing measures. ”

Berce, who has been leading the fight against Covid in the Alps for the past two years, made the remarks as the country is expected to go to the polls on November 28 on the Covid law, which gives authorities more flexibility to fight pandemic.

Although the law is expected to be passed by a fairly large majority according to opinion polls, thousands of people march every week to report vaccination and compulsory health care, despite allowing a large part of society and the economy to reopen.

The situation varies greatly from canton to age and age group, but in general, “the number of adults without immunity is very high” versus the transmissibility of the Delta variant strain.

Although in one week the number of vaccinations has slightly increased, which has been declining for weeks, the vaccination rate remains very insufficient in the eyes of the authorities.

As of November 18, only 65% of the population was fully vaccinated while 2% had received the first of the two doses required.

And the dramatic increase in cases raises fears that hospitals will be flooded with coronavirus patients as soon as winter really begins.

Last week hospitalizations increased by 25%, while the number of deaths jumped by 80% to 53 deaths.

Intensive care units have a coverage rate of 77%, of which 17% are Covid patients.

Christian Althaus, an epidemiologist at the University of Bern, recommends the resumption of teleworking, free tests and an extension of indoor mask use. “The unvaccinated should not hold society hostage,” he told the Swiss newspaper NZZ. As for the pandemic between the neighbors, “we may be in a critical situation by Christmas,” he insisted.

Switzerland – with a population of almost 8.6 million – has recorded 10,926 covid deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
