A few years ago, the world-famous inventor and engineer Elon Musk announced the development of a special project of underground tunnels that will allow cars to move at impressive speeds without traffic jams, weather problems and other troubles. Unfortunately, after an impressive time, the ambitious project was never fully implemented, but engineers from Switzerland, who were clearly inspired by Musk’s idea, are making a significant bet on this format of vehicle movement. They believe that by 2031 a whole network of tunnels will be built in the country for the delivery of goods on unmanned trucks that do not interfere with traffic on public roads.
The project developers plan to build 70 kilometers of tunnels by the appointed date with ten stops for unloading or loading unmanned vehicles with various cargoes. The idea of the project is to create a fully autonomous transport system that would boast not only a reduction in the load on public roads, but also zero emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. And although this may not seem like such a big problem to some, experts believe that standard transport systems will literally be destroyed due to increased traffic over the next 30 years.
At the same time, the Cargo Sous Terrain project turned out to be relatively modest compared to competitors like Hyperloop, which promise to deliver goods at transonic speeds. Specialists from Switzerland plan to create a tunnel with a diameter of about 6 meters with a flat floor and a division into three traffic lanes. Chains of small unmanned trucks will be launched along these lanes, which will move at a rather modest speed of 30 km / h – accordingly, it will take them a little more than two hours to drive the entire section of the tunnel. In total, they plan to put a cargo area on one truck, which will accommodate one or two standard pallets, plus there will be containers with a refrigerator for transporting food.
The trucks will, of course, run on electric power plants – they plan to supply electricity via induction rails, so you won’t have to waste time charging the device. The drone will be loaded with goods and products at ground logistics facilities, after which the truck will be lowered to the tunnel entrance on conditional elevators and launched into the traffic lane. And if the project, which needs to spend 3 billion dollars, is eventually implemented, then the world of cargo transportation will change forever.
