Switzerland: Record number of cases, with 17,634 infections in 24 hours

Covid-19 cases in Switzerland again broke records today, with 17,634 infections within 24 hours, according to data announced by the authorities.

Health Minister Allen Bersett said he had spoken with President Guy Parmelen and the head of the regional health directorate to discuss the deteriorating situation. The ministry has already planned measures that will be implemented, if necessary, as hospitalizations are expected to increase.

“Omicron infections are rising rapidly,” the minister said on Twitter. This variant has already prevailed in Switzerland and it is estimated that 58% of cases are due to it.

“The next set of measures, including closures, is ready. The government can decide quickly when more accurate data on Omicron’s danger will be available,” he added.

Berset reiterated his call for citizens to be vaccinated and given the boost. Switzerland has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Western Europe, with only 67% of the population fully vaccinated to date.

In all, 1.3 million people in Switzerland and Liechtenstein have been infected with the new coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic.
