A larger-scale war in Ukraine could lead to the displacement of 15 million people, the Swiss Minister of Justice said today, citing estimates by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
“If you assume that hostilities continue, that the Russian army is advancing more powerfully into western Ukraine, that there may be escape routes, then almost 1 million people may flee the country every week,” Karin Keller Sutter told press conference in Bern on the Swiss approach to receiving refugees.
“There are now estimates from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees that they say we should estimate about 15 million displaced – this is the highest number … This is about half the population except for the men who are naturally part of the armed forces and defend the country “.
A spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said the agency had not yet revised its original forecast for the 4 million refugees fleeing the country, but was closely monitoring the situation.
UN agencies have said more than 2.5 million refugees have so far fled the fighting in Ukraine since Russian forces invaded on February 24.
