It was released this Sunday (10), in the SXSW the report “All About Games ” (“Everything about Videogames”), bringing together the latest trends in the world of video games.
The report by Joost van Dreunen, academic and entrepreneur, specialist in video games, begins by showing that the largest companies in the gaming sector have annual revenues in the billions — the case of market leaders Sony (US$30 billion in 2023) and Microsoft ( US$20 billion in 2023).
Video game consumption is divided between console (platforms such as PlayStation and Xbox), PC (computers) and mobile, with significant growth in the use of games on cell phones in recent years.
According to the author of the report, in the coming years there will be a change in the concept of games from products/services to platforms.
How the market has evolved since the beginning of the gaming industry:
1. traditional approach sales in games until now was to sell as many units as possible at the highest price, as in the cases of Zelda and Uncharted.
2. There was also the approach of live services (so-called “forever games”) in multiplayer games, such as Pokémon Go and League of Legends.
3. The next step is to consider games as platforms , which extend beyond the game. The idea is a mix of online and offline activities, as in the cases of Fortnite and Roblox.
The idea of games as a platform means creating several actions with consumers: play, watch, connect, create and collect.
Also according to the report, one of the next trends is multiplayer games — no one wants to play alone anymore.
The document also points out that industry leadership has changed in recent years between publishers and gatekeepers. If in 2000 Sony and Nintendo reigned, now they compete for space with Tencent, Apple and Google.

Competitors now need to face challenges such as maintaining initial success (the trend is for a sharp drop in the number of users after 3 weeks of launch) and how to avoid the layoffs that haunt the industry.
When looking at generations Z and Alpha, the consumption of games far exceeds the consumption of videos. It's no surprise that the entertainment industry has made series and films based on characters from the world of video games, such as Lasf of Us, Sonic and The Witcher.
South by Southwest, better known as SXSW, takes place annually in March, in Austin, in the United States and is considered one of the biggest technology, music, innovation and culture events in the world, also bringing attractions from different countries. This year's edition started on the 8th and runs until the 16th of March.
