Any similarity with reality is not a mere coincidence, at least in the case of the film “High Tide” . The Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi co-producer and protagonist of the story, was at the festival SXSW alongside her husband, producer and director of the film, Marco Calvani, to launch the film.
Both spoke exclusively to CNN about the project and the relationship.
“We joke that this film is our first child,” he said. Pigossi . “Marco was already writing the script when we met, but the main character became Brazilian because of me. It’s a love story that has everything to do with ours and I’m very proud of this work.”
But if in fiction Lourenço, played by Pigossi, races against time to live his love story, in real life the end of filming marked the beginning of his and Calvani's “happily ever after”. “He asked me to marry him on the last day. This work was an event, it marked our history,” he recalled.
The relationship already has a nickname among American friends: they are “The Marcos”. Pigossi and Calvani live in Los Angeles, and the actor says that moving countries was essential for him to feel completely free to talk about his sexual orientation.
“It was essential that I distance myself to have other experiences, to understand myself better, and this was a process that this film concludes,” he stated. “And I wanted to put this out as an actor too, because I had all this inside me, I wanted to put it on the screen. I think it's important for us to naturalize and talk about this issue. So this character closes that cycle.”
