Symptomatic Covid cases in China more than triple in 24 hours

Mainland China reported 1,807 new symptomatic cases of locally transmitted Covid-19 on Saturday, more than triple the number of cases a day earlier.
The information was released by the National Health Commission, this Sunday (13).

China’s case count is much lower than that of many other countries, but the growing number could complicate Beijing’s “dynamic release” ambition to suppress the contagion as quickly as possible.

The increase has prompted health officials to allow the public to purchase self-test kits for the first time to help detect infections.

Jilin province, in the northeast of the country, reported 1,412 of the cases, representing 78% of the total.

The increase “showed that some local areas, facing a rapid rise in the epidemic, lacked the capacity to expand medical resources, resulting in limited admission of infections to centralized facilities within a short period of time,” said an official from Jilin Province. in a press conference.

Authorities in Changchun, the now-closed provincial capital, are carrying out mass testing and working to turn an exhibition center into a 1,500-bed temporary hospital, according to the local authority and state media reports.

Shenzhen’s southern tech hub reported 60 new local cases with confirmed symptoms on Saturday, the most in the city since China contained the first outbreak in early 2020.

All nine districts of Shenzhen have stopped dining at restaurants, closed indoor entertainment venues and required companies to have employees work from home if remote work is possible, with exceptions for essential sectors.

Six local government officials or Communist Party officials in the southern city of Dongguan have been removed from their duties for doing a poor job of preventing and controlling Covid-19, state media said on Sunday.

The China Development Forum, a high-profile business meeting in Beijing that was originally scheduled for March 19-22, will be postponed indefinitely due to the Covid situation, the organizer said in a statement.

The number of new locally transmitted asymptomatic cases, which mainland China does not classify as confirmed cases, rose to 1,315 on Saturday from 1,048 the day before, the fourth straight day of increases.
