Synology recently introduced RackStation RS3621RPxs, RS3621xs + and RS4021xs + general purpose networked storage solutions for rack mounting. The first two are 2U high, the third is 3U high. According to the manufacturer, they are designed for small and medium-sized businesses, and support “high-performance solutions for backup, virtualization, video surveillance and remote work.”

The RS3621RPxs and RS3621xs + each have 12 drive bays, while the RS4021xs + has 16 drive bays. Next-generation RackStation storage benefits include an integrated backup power supply. The storage is based on Intel Xeon processors. In the case of RS3621RPxs, this is a six-core processor, while for the other two models, eight-core processors are selected. The memory capacity of RS3621RPxs and RS3621xs + is 8 GB. The RS4021xs + storage has 16 GB. In all cases, the memory is expandable up to 64 GB.
The difference between the models can be traced in the means of network connection. Each of them has four 1GbE ports, but RS3621xs + and RS4021xs + additionally have two 10GbE ports. Expansion of the configuration allows the presence of two PCIe Gen 3.0 x8 slots.
