Eleven people were killed today in a Turkish raid against a position of regime forces in the north Syriafollowing overnight clashes between Ankara forces and Kurdish fighters, according to a non-governmental organization.
“Eleven fighters were killed in a Turkish airstrike that targeted a Syrian regime position near the border with Turkey,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
“We don’t know if they all come from the regime forces or if they are Kurdish fighters who control the zone”said Observatory director Rami Abdelrahman.
The airstrike targeted a position of regime forces in the village of Tzarkali, west of the border town of Kobani, according to the same img.
Regime forces have been deployed in recent years in areas controlled by Kurdish forces near the border with Turkey as part of deals aimed at curbing Ankara’s cross-border attacks targeting Kurdish fighters it considers “terrorists”.
Fierce clashes broke out overnight between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by Kurdish fighters, and Turkish forces, who intensified their shelling of Kurdish positions after an attack on one of their positions on the Turkish side of the border, according to with the Observatory.
The conflict in Syria, which started in 2011, has become more complicated after the intervention of various organizations and foreign powers. It has caused an estimated half a million deaths, millions of displaced persons and refugees and the fragmentation of the country.
