Syrian President Bashar al-Assad traveled today, for the first time since the beginning of the conflict in 2011, to the province of Aleppo, in the north of the country, where he visited one of the largest thermal power plants in Syria, the presidency announced.
The city of Aleppo, which was Syria’s financial capital before 2011, became the scene of fierce fighting between government forces on one side and rebel factions and the Islamic State group on the other between 2012 and its recapture by government forces in 2016.
Assad went to the power station in the eastern part of the province of the same name to attend “the start of work” on a part of the plant, according to a message from the Syrian presidency on Telegram.
“The province of Aleppo suffered more than the other provinces,” the presidency announced, citing Bashar al-Assad.
“And no big city suffered as much as Aleppo, in terms of water supply, electricity, services, shells, disasters and terrorism,” he added.
“Therefore, the province and the city are entitled to be the biggest beneficiaries of the repair of the plant.”
The complete reopening of this factory, one of the most important in the country, will contribute to the supply of electricity to Aleppo and its suburbs.
Assad also attended the reopening of a water pumping station that was completely destroyed in 2012 due to the conflict, according to the presidency’s announcement on Telegram.
It is Assad’s first visit to Aleppo province since the start of the bloody conflict that has since 2011 killed nearly 500,000 people, destroyed the country’s infrastructure and displaced millions.
The battle for control of the city of Aleppo is considered the biggest victory for the government forces and the biggest defeat for the opposition factions that controlled the eastern districts of the city.
Government forces have not recaptured the entire province, however, as the border strip with Turkey is controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces on one side, and Ankara-backed Syrian factions on the other.
