A base in Syria of the international coalition fighting the jihadists was targeted by pro-Iranian paramilitary groups today, its administration said.
“Coalition forces were targeted by eight indirect strikes on the (Green Base) Green Village,” the US-led coalition said in a statement. The attack came from “malicious” groups “backed by Iran”, the text goes on to say, adding that there were no injuries, only minor property damage.
According to the coalition, a similar attack was averted on Tuesday.
The coalition “which continues to see its forces threatened in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed paramilitary forces (…) retains the right to defend itself and join forces in the face of any threat,” said its leader, the general. John O. Brennan Jr.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based non-governmental organization with an extensive network of sources in Syria, said this morning that another attack had taken place on the international coalition’s largest base in Syria, located in al-Omar’s oil field. One of the rockets fired hit the helipad, causing property damage. Another two fell in places where there are no military installations.
The Observatory added that coalition forces responded with fire on the outskirts of the city of Al Mayadin, where the rockets came from.
No casualties were reported. When asked about the incident, the coalition said it had no information about further attacks.
About 900 US troops remain in northeastern Syria and at al-Tanf base in the south, on the border with Iraq and Jordan.
