Syria: Death toll rises to 94 after migrant boat sinks near Tartus

The death toll from the sinking of a boat carrying migrants off the coast of Syria has risen to 94, after more bodies were found off the coast of Baniyas in the Mediterranean, Syrian state television reported this afternoon, in an update.

The boat carrying migrants had set sail earlier this week from Lebanon.

Syrian authorities began locating bodies in the sea off Tartus on Thursday night. Syria’s transport ministry had said, citing survivors, that the ship had set sail from Munich in northern Lebanon on Thursday with 120 to 150 people on board and bound for Europe.

Due to the economic crisis in Lebanon, one of the worst in the world since 1850, many are trying to leave the country. In addition to the Lebanese, the ships often carry people who are already refugees from Syria and Palestine.
