Syria: ‘Israeli attack’ in Damascus area – At least two civilians dead

An Israeli attack in the Syrian capital, Damascus, has killed two civilians and caused property damage, Syrian state media reported, citing a source close to Bashar al-Assad’s armed forces.

A Syrian army official, however, assured that “our anti-aircraft defense shot down most of the Israeli missiles” that were fired earlier.

Since the outbreak of war in Syria in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes, almost entirely from the air, against positions of the Syrian government’s armed forces as well as their allies, the Iranian and pro-Iranian armed factions, especially the Shiite militia. The Israeli authorities often say that they will not allow Iran, a sworn enemy of the Jewish state, to build a bridgehead on Syrian territory.

Israeli raids seem to be getting even faster this year. In late February, at least six Syrian regime fighters were killed in Israeli strikes near Damascus.
