The Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma recover from COVID-19 and will soon fully return to their duties after a period of isolation at home, the presidency announced today, according to APE.
On March 8, the presidency announced that Assad, 55, and his wife of 45 years, who announced her recovery from breast cancer in 2019, tested positive for COVID-19 after they showed mild symptoms and would work in isolation at home.
“Laboratory and radiological indications of their state of health are gradually returning to normal,” the presidency said in a statement, the first public briefing on the couple’s condition since they became ill.
Syria has seen a sharp rise in infections since mid-February, a member of the government’s coronavirus advisory committee told Reuters in early March as the country launched its vaccination campaign.
Health officials and aid officials say it remains difficult to assess the full extent of the disease due to a lack of testing capabilities in a health system that has been devastated after ten years of war.
