The tomb of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, located in his hometown on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, was set on fire, according to footage broadcast today by AFP. Hafez al-Assad ruled Syria for three decades until his death in 2000, when his son Bashar took over. The latter left the country shortly before the rebels seized Damascus on Sunday. The tomb of Hafez al-Assad, located in a mausoleum on the Alawite side of Lattakia, was burned by rebels, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
