Syria: Six civilians killed in Afrin bombing

Six civilians, including two children, were killed and 30 others wounded in the bombing of the northern Syrian city of Afrin, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Afrin, in the province of Aleppo, is controlled by Turkish forces and their Syrian allies. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

On January 13, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives near a military base where pro-Turkish forces are based in the same city.

The Turkish army deployed in 2016 in northwestern Syria around Afrin and the Idlib region, in one of the last pockets not controlled by Damascus. With the help of its Syrian supporters, Ankara conducted three large-scale operations on Syrian soil bordering Turkey (2016-17, 2018 and 2019). The aim was to expel jihadists and fighters from the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the main Kurdish militia that is considered a “terrorist organization” in Turkey. In the last two years, however, the intensity and frequency of conflicts has decreased.

Thanks to Russian support, since 2015, the Syrian regime has regained much of the territory it lost when the war broke out in March 2011.

According to the Observatory, nearly half a million people have been killed in Syria over the past decade and millions more have been displaced.
