Syria: Three killed in clashes between Kurdish forces and Islamic State

Three people, including a woman and a child, were killed in an internally displaced refugee camp in Syria’s al-Hool district during clashes between Kurdish forces and Islamic State (IS) jihadists, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today.

The overcrowded al-Hall, controlled by the semi-autonomous Kurdish administration and home to about 56,000 people according to the UN, has once again been the scene of escape attempts and attacks.

The camp, described as a “jihadist gunpowder depot”, is home to foreign jihadist families, displaced Syrian and Iraqi refugee families, some of whom continue to maintain ties with Islamic State.

Occasionally weapons are infiltrated into the camp by Islamic State supporters.

RPG rockets were fired from inside the camp, “causing the death of a woman, a child (…) and an IS core member,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The UK-based NGO, which has an extensive network of sources in Syria, added that four women and six children were injured.

“One of our patrols was targeted last night, Monday, March 28, at al-Hool camp,” the Kurdish security force Assayesh said.

The Assayesh said they opened fire after firing from Kalashnikovs, pistols and RPG rockets, “killing one mercenary and wounding others”, without mentioning any civilian deaths.

Last week, on the occasion of the three-year defeat of the Islamic State and the loss of territory in Iraq, the Kurds expressed their regret for the “inaction” of the international community in the face of the jihadist organization’s efforts to expand into Syria and Iraq, despite repeated urgings of the Kurds.

Most western countries refuse to repatriate their citizens from these camps, accepting them back to the countries with the dropper citizens for reasons of possible attacks inside their countries.
