Turkish troops exchanged heavy fire with Kurdish fighters on Tuesday in the northern Syrian city of Kobani, resulting in the death of a civilian, as tension between the warring parties escalated.
Residents of Kobani reported that artillery fire hit areas of the city and its suburbs overnight and the attack intensified during the day.
The city’s administrative authorities said in a statement that at least one child died from the bombings, while there were also injuries.
Ankara sees the semi-autonomous administration of northern and eastern Syria – led by the Kurds – as a threat to national security on its borders.
Tayyip Erdogan had announced a new Turkish invasion to create a safe zone 30 kilometers deep from the border of northern Syria.
In Kobani, since 2015 when Kurdish fighters pushed back the Islamic State, there had been no recorded fighting until very recently. Bshelling and drone attacks have increased in several Syrian border towns, while in July at least three Kurdish commanders were killed in attacks the Syrian Democratic Forces blamed on Ankara.
Dilvin, a shopkeeper and mother of one, told Reuters that scenes of chaos erupted in Kobani when shelling intensified on Tuesday.
“People started running everywhere, cars everywhere, people were asking about their friends and family,” he told the agency by phone.
“There was so much screaming. So much fear. Now everyone is locked in their homes,” said Dilvin, who gave her first name for security reasons.
