Syria: US military kills at least 17 pro-Iran fighters

The United States carried out, Thursday, February 25, a military operation presented as “defensive” by the American ministry of Defense, by striking infrastructures used by pro-Iranian militias in Syria. Defense Ministry spokesman John Kirby said that these infrastructures were “located at a border post used by militias supported by Iran, in particular Kataeb Hezbollah”. “The strikes were authorized in response to recent attacks against US and Coalition personnel in Iraq, and ongoing threats against such personnel,” he said.

At least 17 pro-Iran fighters were killed in the strikes, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) said. “The strikes destroyed three trucks of ammunition (…) There are a lot of dead. At least 17 fighters perished according to a preliminary assessment, all members of Hachd al-Chaabi, ”OSDH director Rami Abdel Rahmane told Agence France-Presse, referring to the powerful coalition of pro-Iraqi paramilitaries. -Iran.

Three attacks have been blamed on pro-Iranian armed groups in a week, as the United States demands concessions from Tehran before reinstating the agreement from which the United States withdrew in 2018 under Donald’s administration Trump. According to US officials, the modus operandi is the same as for the dozens of attacks against Western interests between late 2019 and late 2020.

“It’s the same style of attacks and intelligence information shows that others will follow,” an American official told Agence France-Presse on condition of anonymity. “This proportionate military response was carried out in parallel with diplomatic measures, in particular consultations with the partners of the anti-jihadist coalition” in Iraq and Syria, underlined John Kirby. “The operation sends an unambiguous message: President Biden will protect US forces and those of the coalition,” he concluded. “At the same time, we have acted in a calculated manner in order to calm the situation in eastern Syria and in Iraq. ”
