Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad vowed to defeat rebels through the use of force, speaking after a surprise offensive took over most of the city of Aleppo, the Syrian state news agency reported on Sunday.
Assad made the comments during a telephone call with the interim leader of the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia, Badra Ganba, the agency reported.
Russian and Syrian jets bomb northern Syria
This Sunday (1st), Russian and Syrian jets attacked the city of Idlib, on the second day of intensive bombings in northern Syria, with the aim of repelling the insurgents.
Residents said one of the strikes hit a residential area in central Idlib, the largest city in a rebel-held enclave near the border with Turkey, where about four million people live in tents and makeshift housing.
At least four people were killed and dozens were injured, according to rescuers at the scene.
The Syrian army and its ally Russia say they are targeting insurgent hideouts and deny targeting civilians.
On Saturday (30), Russian and Syrian jets bombed other cities in the province of Idlib, which fell completely under rebel control in the most daring attack in years of a civil war where the front lines have been practically frozen since 2020.
Insurgents invaded the city of Aleppo, east of Idlib province, on Friday night (29), forcing the army to remobilize, in the biggest challenge to President Bashar al-Assad in years.
The Syrian army said dozens of its soldiers were killed in the attack.

This Sunday (1st), the Army said it had recaptured several cities that had been invaded in recent days by rebels.
The rebels are a coalition of traditional secular armed groups backed by Turkey, along with Hyat Tahrir al Sham, an Islamist group that is the opposition’s most potent military force.
Hyat Tahrir al Sham is designated a terrorist group by the US, Russia, Türkiye and other countries. Assad is a close ally of Moscow.
The war, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced many millions, has continued since 2011 without a formal end. But most of the major fighting stopped years ago, after Iran and Russia helped Assad’s government gain control of most land and all major cities.
