Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's uncle goes on trial for war crimes

The Syrian president's uncle, Rifaat al-Assad, is being referred to a Swiss federal criminal court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The announcement about Bashar al-Assad's relative was made by the country's public prosecutor's office, two years after the issuance of a search warrant against him by the Swiss judiciary. The indictment “is based on events that unfolded in February 1982 in the city of Hama and in the context of the armed conflict between the Syrian armed forces and the Islamist opposition,” the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement as reported by the Athens News Agency citing AFP. The former Syrian vice president and former Syrian army officer is accused of “war crimes and crimes against humanity”.
