Syrian troops exchange fire with Lebanese army and armed groups

Syrian troops exchanged fire with Lebanese soldiers and armed groups in Northeast Lebanon during the dawn on Monday (17) in a new round of clashes along the border of both countries.

The tensions along the mountain border have been high since Islamic rebels overthrew Bashar al-Assad of Syria, Tehran ally and Lebanese armed group supported by Iran, Hezbollah, and installed their own institutions and army.

At the end of Sunday (16), the Syrian Ministry of Defense accused Hezbollah of crossing to Syrian territory and kidnapping and killing three members of the new Syrian army.

Hezbollah denied any involvement.

A Lebanese security source told Reuters that the three Syrian soldiers crossed to Lebanese territory first and were killed by armed members of a tribe in northeastern Lebanon who feared that the city was under attack.

In retaliation of deaths, Syrian troops bombed led border cities at night, according to the Syrian Ministry of Defense and the Lebanese army.

Residents of the city of Al-Qasr, less than a kilometer from the border, told Reuters that they fled inland to escape the bombing.

The Army of Lebanon reported in a statement on Monday that he delivered the bodies of the three Syrians killed to the Syrian authorities and responded to the fire of the Syrian territory and sending reinforcements to the border area.

The Syrian army sent a trap of troops and several border tanks on Monday (17), according to a Reuters reporter along the border.

Syrian troops shot the air as they moved through the cities on their way to the border.

“Large military reinforcements have been brought to reinforce positions along the Syrian-Lebanese border and avoid any violations in the coming days,” said Maher Ziwani, head of a Syrian army division being sent to the border.
