Iran supports a political solution to the Syrian crisis, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said tonight in his televised speech at the tripartite summit with Russia and Turkey, which is being held in Tehran.
“Syria’s fate should be decided by its people, without foreign interference… The illegal presence of the occupying US forces is destabilizing Syria (…) The strong presence of the Syrian army will help preserve the (territorial) integrity of the country,” he added.
Earlier, Iran’s supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called for strengthening Tehran’s cooperation with Moscow in a meeting he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“In the long term, Iran’s cooperation with Russia is very beneficial for both countries. There are agreements and contracts between the two countries in the fields of oil and natural gas, which should be fully implemented,” he said, according to the official announcement.
Referring to the Ukrainian crisis, Khamenei said that “war is a hard and difficult event and Iran is not at all happy when ordinary people suffer.”
