SYRIZA: Concerns about back and forth about compulsory vaccination

By Niki Zorba

Confusion that does not find a way out still prevails in SYRIZA for the agenda that has now opened for the extension of compulsory vaccination not only to those over 60 but also to younger age groups.

The government is already considering scenarios for extending the obligation to the ages of 50-60, which is now reflected openly in public positions of its executives.

The “hike”

Koumoundourou, for her part, officially stands for the “imposition of a fine” of 100 euros per month, a sentence which she voted against and continues to reject after disgust, accusing it of being “divisive”, without any health imprint as it will allow those “having” the uninitiated. to “buy” their right to non-vaccination as it encourages “reactions” that further incite anti-vaccinators, sabotaging thethe project of increasing vaccinations, in which otherwise they unwaveringly advocate.

Thereafter the difficulties for SYRIZA begin because he has no desire to enter into a substantive debate on a counter-proposal to the government decision. For the time being, the party has “drummed up” behind the excuse that “Mitsotakis is the government, not us and it is not possible every time we are blackmailed to approve after a holiday spasmodic decisions that he takes in the midst of his relapses”.

This is a single line in the party for the time being, a result of the embarrassment that has been caused so far, the government has decided to take back its position that the obligation has “exhausted” its possibility for an effective method of stopping the pandemic but also the ambiguous attitude on the “unconstitutionality” of compulsory vaccination.

“Ambiguity”

The ambivalence has now passed to the opposite political camp, SYRIZA. First, there is the feeling in Koumoundourou that Kyriakos Mitsotakis will “pay” political costswith his decision for mandatory vaccination after a fine of 100 euros while they choose to stand on statements such as that of Elias Mosialos who expressed his disagreement with the measure of the fine.

Beyond that, however, the Koumoundourou remains λευ helpless in the face of new developments and the compulsory vaccination agenda, as it is rapidly evolving, however (assisted by the debate that has opened within the EU). Not only does he not decide to take a step forward by presenting his own counter-proposal to the official opposition party for the vaccination, but on the contrary he shows that he is taking steps backwards.

In fact, given that throughout last month, SYRIZA came out as an “accelerating” force to make difficult decisions and now does not even show a willingness to move towards unpopular counter-proposals, its current stance is characteristic of the different readings and positions that prevail at home. of.

In Koumoundourou, it is a given that they are engaged in “measurements” of political costs against the Government, estimating grosso modo that with its latest decision the government faction has also dissatisfied vaccinated citizens who disagree with the imposition of a financial fine.

Dimensional reflection

And if from the “central” of the party has been chosen for the time being the “line” of the full attack on the Government for relapses in the management of the pandemic, in within SYRIZA there is widespread concern and especially cross-cuttingon how the party should act from now on in the face of critical issues.

The proposal of Mr. Tsipras’s advisor, professor of hematology Grigoris Gerotziafas on universal compulsory vaccination with a “penalty” the need to show a certificate for all daily activities of citizens and without age criteria, is a proposal that caused embarrassment to Alexis Tsipras and hastened distancing himself from his adviser, insisting that he does not adopt it, is nevertheless a basis for discussion which is heard positively – even under certain conditions – by a few in the party.

Close to the proposal of Grigoris Gerotziafas, for example, are executives who are close to the so-called internal opposition (umbrella) but also to the wider presidents. At least in its essence.

An emblematic member of the umbrella, he reported in this regard to “K.“, not without reflection is the truth, that” he would listen to the proposal of Gerotziafa if he was accompanied by the context of what SYRIZA has been asking for months for public health: Strengthening the National Health System, hiring doctors and due to the current conditions, ordering in private beds.

This is the same executive who added that ” I’m not particularly moved by these unvaccinated rights. We have a health crisis and health is a public good. There is no more extreme anti-social behavior than not being vaccinated you because you think that your neighbor who was vaccinated will “save” you “.

Another member of a different internal party group (specifically belongs to “presidents” of SYRIZA), expressed to “K” his concerns about the proposals for which his party should come forward “in terms of compulsory vaccination:” We should ask to be extended to other professional categories no Only in security forces, churches and the armed forces. It is inconceivable that there should be no obligation on the employees in the restauranthe said, similarly restrained with his previous “partner”.

Commonly without the will to create an internal party debate that will deviate from the “central” political line of the party, which can be summed up in a free performance: “The way Mitsotakis did it alone and good mess with the dissatisfied”.
