SYRIZA: Countdown for the decisions A. Tsipras – ‘Riddle’ the secretary

By Niki Zorba

Executives come and go in the 7th of Koumoundourou, at the invitation of Alexis Tsipras in view of his decisions for the new SYRIZA, as it is formed after the internal party procedures of May 15 that the members of the new Central Committee of the party voted.

The one that meets for the first time under its new composition next Sunday, with Alexis Tsipras announcing his decisions for the next day: He will propose to the new JV to re-elect the current secretary Dimitris Tzanakopoulos or will there be last minute “surprises”?

The data (in terms of reporting so far) are vague, but they have as a stigma, the intention of the president of SYRIZA to keep Mr. Tzanakopoulos in his post with his term to be considered in fact successful but also the hard bra de fer which is in the background and concerns the new correlations of forces:

The “presidential” (Members’ Movement), undoubtedly winners in terms of correlations from the ballot box on May 15, are looking for a stronger role and positions.

“Umbrella”, for its part, is in … “permanent conference” on how to move in Sunday’s meeting. If Alexis Tsipras proposes a person for secretary who is in a fierce conflict with them, it is not excluded that she will withdraw her own candidacy, ending the “tradition” to SYRIZA that wanted the party secretary to be elected by consensus, by all Trends.

If the … straightforward scenario is confirmed and D. Tzanakopoulos remains SYRIZA secretary, then Alexis Tsipras will propose a woman as his deputy.

On the contrary, if the party president finally chooses a woman for the post of secretary, her deputy will be appointed a man.

The 50-50 gender quota imposed on the new Central Committee is a matter that – in addition to the new statute – the party president himself takes very seriously. After all, the leaders in the Central Committee have women like you (E. Ahtsioglou-R. Dourou), with Alexis Tsipras commenting in a recent interview that the new central committee is full of women and not because of the quota in their favor that was applied. They “swept” and without the need for an institutional springboard.

Political Secretariat and Executive Secretariat

On Sunday, the SYRIZA Central Committee will announce the new Political Secretariat of the party (former Political Council). In theory, it will have about 30-40 members (the previous one had 41) and this body will obviously reflect the new internal party affiliations.

The interest, of course, lies in who will make up the “Executive Secretariat”, which will replace the “Political Center” of SYRIZA, jointly the team of “coffee” of Alexis Tsipras, which included his closest associates with whom he took and critical decisions.

The number of members has not been determined yet (it is expected to number around 10 members – the previous one had expanded on the move to around 15)) but the point is obviously political: The new composition of Alexis Tsipras’s team of associates will captures the internal party correlations (sweeping victory of the Presidents) but will mainly reflect the very personal choices-collaborations of the president of SYRIZA.

In short, who will Alexis Tsipras nominate for his closest circle of collaborators, in view of the pre-election battle.
