SYRIZA polls record ND damage but marginal recovery for Koumoundourou

By Niki Zorba

A difference of eight percentage points in favor of the ND is recorded in the November SYRIZA election tendencies, with the ruling party leading by 30.8 against 22.8 of the official opposition. The closure of the gap, as indicated in the same poll analysis is due more in the poll of the Government and less in the strengthening of the polls of the official opposition party.

This finding also shows that the percentages of ND decreased compared to the previous survey in July (by 3.6 points) while SYRIZA recorded an increase of only 0.5%. Opera means that due to the deterioration of the government, the official opposition party did not capitalize on the polls.

This survey also records a marginal increase in the intention of KINAL to vote (of the order of 0.2%) without sharing as a result findings of other polls that see high profits for the Movement for Change from the process of internal party elections.

The research, however, seems encouraging for Koumoundourou in the sense that it shows that … something is moving for SYRIZA, as its voters in the 2019 elections “leave” the gray zone gradually and re-enter the “game”. The opposite is recorded for the ND voters who appear to be moving to the “gray zone” of the unspecified vote.

The critical elements

The analysis that accompanies the study of electoral trends (Poulantza Institute – using 34 polls from August to the middle of this month), points out, among other things:

1. In all the indicators that the study is constantly monitoring, according to the authors, there is a downward trend of convergence of the two major parties, in the sense that the losses of the ruling party are, at least for the time being, greater or faster than the profits of the official opposition. In more detail:

2. As for the satisfaction expressed by the citizens, as far as this government is concerned, it remains almost stable on average (+ 0.8%), while the satisfaction from the official opposition, judging by the proposals it submits, shows little increase (+ 2.2%).

3. The picture of the index of the most suitable prime minister remains largely unchanged.

4. The intention to vote for New Democracy (-3.6%) recorded average losses, while the intention to vote for SYRIZA-PS (+ 0.5%) and KINAL (+ 0.2%) remained marginally stable, and marginal losses were recorded by the other opposition parliamentary parties.

5. Regarding the index of the turnout of the voters of ND and SYRIZA-PS respectively, the turnout of ND remains higher by 10 percentage points, although the difference in the turnout of the two parties has decreased compared to the previous study. The same applies to voter turnover on both sides, between the two parties.

6.Finally, regarding the party origin of those who today belong to the “unspecified vote”, those coming from SYRIZA-PS seem to be gradually leaving the “gray zone” and re-entering the electoral “game”, as it is typically noted , while in the current period the former voters of ND 2019 constitute an increased percentage of the unspecified vote.

From the individual elements of the polls of the period, the authors stand especially on the alternation of economy, accuracy and pandemic in the list of the most important problems and in the “condition of multiple and repeated crises”, which this alternation reflects, with the society feeling, as they point out, “unprotected”. Based on these data, the authors argue that the “strong point” of the government – always based on the evaluations of the citizens – is the digitization of the state, but also foreign policy and defense, while on the contrary SYRIZA-PS prevails in matters social policy and protection of the weakest.
