SYRIZA: ‘Quality leap’ participation – Umbrella: ‘Tough conflict’ with presidents

By Niki Zorba

They can not draw a common conclusion in SYRIZA even for the message of the internal party ballot for the election of delegates in view of its third congress which takes place in nine days from today (April 14-17).

And this is because Koumoundourou and “Umbrella” disagree on the evaluation and participation.

They also disagree on the numbers

A competent source from the “central” of the party stated in Capital.gr full of satisfaction for the fact that in the voting for the election of delegates, there was a tripling of participants from the 2016 conference: “In 2016, SYRIZA had 24,000 members, of which 13,500 voted. Today SYRIZA has 61,500 members and 40,500 went to the polls. This is a quality leap. ”

Umbrella executives have different reading of results and recruits. A top executive in this case, speaking to Capital.gr, said he was concerned about the “low turnout” in the vote and spoke about “bells” that rang in Attica.

The same executive identified the participation in Athens at 52-53%, giving an improved picture of participation in the region, 65%. However, he describes the internal party climate, especially in the periphery, in terms of “tough conflict”. between “presidents” and “umbrella”.

Regarding the internal party relations, the Umbrella, the internal party minority, calculates its percentage against the Tsipras bloc, at 30% in the periphery and at 40% in Athens.

The “sweeping” dominance of Tsipras

No surprises or upheavals in general arose from the internal party polls that were set up on Friday and closed on Sunday. The vote simply confirmed the existing balance of power, although the presidential ones give a picture of even greater dominance of A. Tsipras over the “dissidents”, talking about state difference and dominance, with a “score” of 75-25 in favor of the president of SYRIZA.

The Umbrella, however, sends a message of “concern” about low participation, especially in Athens: “Athens rang bells” notes its central executive, who estimates that if in the polls set up this three days the turnout was around 32,000-33,000 (that is how much its executives estimate the turnout), then the most votes with which it will be elected Alexis Tsipras from the vote that will follow after the congress (if his proposal for election of president and JV “passes” from the grassroots) will be “double at best. At most to reach 55,000-56,000 votes and the comparison with the respective internal party procedures in N.D and KINAL will be to the detriment of SYRIZA).

The contradiction in the argument This is not only what Koumoundourou maintains from the beginning, that is, that only registered members of SYRIZA will have the right to vote in this internal party process and not friends and passers-by “as happened in ND-KINAL” but the vote for the election of delegates does not have the same interest and dynamics, as the stakes were low and it is more about “party insiders”. When the vote for the election of Alexis Tsipras and the members of the Central Committee of the party will take place, then it is possible that many more members will rush to the polls.

Elsewhere, Alexis Tsipras, shortly before the start of the third SYRIZA congress, continues touring and rhetoric of fierce confrontation with the government. Today he is visiting Crete, while within a week the SYRIZA Political Council will probably meet to discuss the conclusions of the vote.
