The government’s plan to ensure the adequacy of the energy system this winter and throughout 2022, is requested by the government 60 SYRIZA MPs who, led by the head of environment and energy Socrates Famellos address a question and request to submit documents to Minister for the Environment and Energy.
Opposition lawmakers point to the risk of power and fuel shortages in Greece ahead of the colder months of the year, which appear to be “creating the fragmented and unplanned energy policy of the Mitsotakis government”.
“The unplanned and” false “de-lignification announced by Mr. Mitsotakis in September 2019 at the UN, since it is not a question of replacing lignite plants with RES but of replacing them with private units of mineral, imported natural gas, except for unemployment lignite areas and a crisis in the price of electricity, also raises the issue of security of supply of the country with electricity. The schedule of withdrawal of lignite units is constantly changing, with the government regressing between 2023, 2025 and 2028 and lignite units seem to be finally called “in the coming months, to cover the increased demand, as happened during the heatwave last August, without even having sufficient planning and preparation for it”, point out the SYRIZA MPs and refer to publications that speak of a “bell” of IPTO on the issue of security of supply at the Ministry of Environment and Energy (RIS), from the beginning of October, with which it requests from the gas producers and from PPC full availability of the units (fuel-maintenance) for the period December – February 2022.
SYRIZA-PS MPs ask to know if the government has a plan to ensure the adequacy of the energy system this winter and throughout 2022 and what exactly it predicts, which specific lignite plants should be ready for operation in order not to face the problem of adequacy of the electricity system and how this will be ensured, what is the operating framework for these units in terms of their environmental parameters and obligations, if the stocks and domestic quantities of lignite are sufficient and from which lignite mines they come, as well as and whether the necessary gas supplies have been secured for both the power generation system and the other uses.
Finally, they ask to be submitted: the initial letter of IPTO on the issues of adequacy, the reply letter of PPC to IPTO on the availability of lignite units, which was also notified to RIS which “rings a bell” for the availability of lignite units, as well as and letters exchanged on this subject later.
