For the “delay of anti-corrosion and anti-flood works in the burnt areas of Western Attica”, 18 SYRIZA MPs address a question and a request for documents to the ministers of the Interior and Environment and Energy.
“In the areas affected by the devastating fires in May and August 2021, the necessary anti-corrosion and anti-flood works should have already been carried out today, 1 year later.
But we find that little and completely inadequate anti-erosion works have been carried out (log dams and log dams), while the necessary anti-flood works, such as small gravity dams, have not been implemented at all”, the MPs report and point out that all the burnt forest material remains in place , with the risk that in the case of heavy rains it will be swept away, reach the inhabited areas and block the passage of water under the road bridges, acting as a dam and causing flooding in the neighboring areas, with great damage to the city of Megara and the settlements of Alepochori .
The until now long delay in the execution of the above interventions poses great risks for the safety of the citizens as well as for the process of natural regeneration after last year’s disaster, report the SYRIZA MPs who tabled the question, led by George Tsipras and call on the co-competent ministers to inform Parliament if:
– is there a plan for the execution of anti-corrosion works (log beams, log barriers, etc.) and if so, how much work is involved and when is it going to be implemented.
– is there planning for the execution of small gravity dams and if so, in which positions and when it is planned to be implemented.
– have the necessary sums been reserved for the above interventions and, if so, in which Budget codes.
– additional funds have been secured through the SAEP – PDE which provides for the financing of emergency needs and a relevant support request has been forwarded to the Ministry. Development.
The two ministers, Interior and Environment, are invited to submit the relevant Decisions for project approvals and credit commitments.
