SYRIZA: The government insists on the provision that prohibits the possibility of informing what the EYP watched

The key question of whether the government intends to abolish the provision it passed last March, which prohibited the subsequent information of those monitored by the EYP, retroactively in fact, was once again raised by the Minister of Justice, Member of Parliament for Drama and head of the Justice Department of SYRIZA-PS , T. Xanthopoulos. But the question remained unanswered, according to SYRIZA parliamentary sources.

The same sources state:

Speaking to the Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice, during the discussion of the bill incorporating European directives on the supply of digital services, Mr. Xanthopoulos, addressing the present Minister of Justice, Mr. Tsiara, said, among other things:

“On the occasion of the eavesdropping that preoccupies political current affairs with the imminent establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into the impeachment of Mr. Androulakis and Mr. Koukakis., I would like to ask the competent Minister of Justice, because it is an element of your good intentions to repeal the article 87 of 4790/21 which prohibits the information of those monitored by the EYP. As the Minister of Justice, inform us what you intend to do with this issue that is related to the very functioning of the Republic”..

However, Mr. Tsiaras showed resounding silence. He chose not to give any answer to the MP’s very specific question. He did the same with the other question addressed to him by Mr. Xanthopoulos, regarding the European directive to provide more effective protection to protected witnesses, which the government has withdrawn for months, following the reactions of ND ministers. “This is a directive related to the functioning of the rule of law. We need to strengthen the legal arsenal to protect people who decide to come into conflict with huge interests,” said Mr. Xanthopoulos. But still he received no response.

Finally, he sounded the alarm for the need to protect personal data and “metadata” in digital services so that they do not become the object of enrichment and transaction at the expense of citizens and their rights.
