T. Theodorikakos: A total of 1,250 additional police officers at airports and islands for the tourist season

The Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakos referred to the 50% reinforcement of the police forces at the entrance gates of the country and the main tourist destinations, addressing the beginning of the work of the General Assembly of the Panhellenic Hoteliers Federation.

Mr. Theodorikakos pointed out that, already, 1,250 additional police officers have been directed to the airports, Promachonas and to main island destinations to enhance security during the tourist season.

The Minister stressed that the security enhancement strategy is observed in practice with measurable data and referred to the need for cooperation of all stakeholders to enhance tourism, as, as he said, tourism is the spearhead of the Greek economy.

Key points of the greeting of the Minister of Citizen Protection at the General Assembly of the Panhellenic Federation of Hoteliers:

We strengthened the police forces in the main tourist destinations by 50%

Having cooperated with the Minister of Tourism, we pledged that this year at the entrances and exits of the country and in the main tourist destinations we will strengthen more than we had strengthened the police by 50% last year. This is already being done. As we speak, 1,250 police officers, in addition, have been directed to the entrances and exits of the country and to the tourist destinations.

Indicatively to have the picture, the airport of Athens has already been strengthened with 153 additional police officers, the airport of Thessaloniki with 91, the entrance of the country in Promachonas with 30 police officers, while they have already been directed to major destinations such as Mykonos, plus 53 police, in Santorini 50, in Chania 49, in Zakynthos 42 and in other tourist destinations, not to read the whole list.

We are in constant cooperation and we will cover the airports and the Promachonas and wherever else we are asked with additional forces and the same will happen in the tourist destinations, because we want the tourists to have the image that they are coming to the safest destination, but also the compatriots make us feel that we have taken all appropriate measures to be and feel safe.

I strongly believe in joining forces, in our close and creative cooperation, we are ready to continue this path to achieve a season that against the difficulties of the time, against the new obstacles, against the energy crisis, against war, against inflation and I believe that the Greek economy, through tourism, will give optimistic news to the Greek people in the country, so that we can move forward.

The competitiveness of Greek tourism depends on security

It is obvious that our tourism is the spearhead of the Greek economy. This year, in this very difficult period that we are going through, we expect tourism to receive money in the country and in the state funds, but also in the income of companies and in the support of the jobs of the employees, after two – two and a half years extremely difficult. And I believe that it is a necessary condition of all of us who serve the state, from whatever position we have been called to do so, to cooperate with the private sector and to have the best possible results.

I therefore believe that the competitiveness of the tourism product, even in a country as beautiful as ours, is very much linked to the security sector. Nobody goes somewhere if they are afraid, nobody goes somewhere if they feel insecure. From this point of view, I believe that the field of security is absolutely crucial and decisive, and we must all contribute by identifying problems and solving them.
