T. Theodorikakos: SYRIZA should respect the positive role of the Police in security

The Minister of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakos, made a post on social media regarding the attack received by police forces, according to a related announcement by ELAS, yesterday in the area of ​​Exarchia.

In particular, Mr. Theodorikakos notes: “ELAS is committed to the implementation of laws and the protection of public order and security. Police officers do not attack anyone unprovoked. SYRIZA should come to terms with reality and respect its positive role Police for the safety of citizens and our country”.

According to the General Police Directorate of Attica (GADA), three arrests, 54 arrests and the injury of two police officers are the sum of the incidents during the gathering that took place yesterday, Friday, July 22, in the area of ​​Exarchia.

According to a relevant announcement by ELAS, yesterday, at 20:00, following a call by various groups, movements and collectives, a gathering of approximately 250 people took place in Exarchion square, without prior notification of its conduct to the relevant police authority.

“In order to avoid disruption of the socio-economic life of the area, it was decided with the consent of the prosecutor to impose restrictions and specifically not to carry out a road march”, as reported by ELAS, while adding: “On 21.10, despite the notification to the gathered, by the head of the of the police forces and the police mediator, that the march through the streets of Exarchia will not be allowed, in order to avoid disturbing the order in the neighborhood, the gathered, having covered their facial features with full-face hoods and motorcycle helmets, went down Stournari Street and moved against the police forces, simultaneously throwing stones, marbles, bottles, as well as chairs from shops”.

According to ELAS, “the police forces were attacked and repelled the attackers, with limited use of the necessary means, so that there would be no further escalation and the gathered dispersed in the surrounding streets. A policeman was injured in the face by a marble being thrown, who was taken to hospital.

At the same time, in the attempt of a police officer to carry out a legal check on a 23-year-old, he, in order to avoid the check, attacked him by hitting him on the head and body with punches, kicks and a metal object he was holding, as a result of which the police officer was injured and taken to hospital . In addition, the specific perpetrator attacked with punches and kicks another police officer who rushed to help his injured colleague.

The 23-year-old was eventually stopped and arrested. A case file was filed against him for the offenses of violence against employees, bodily harm to an employee, attempted bodily harm to an employee, disobedience and violation of the Weapons Act.

Two additional people were arrested for disorderly conduct and possession of a small amount of drugs, respectively. The police forces brought 54 people from the area of ​​Exarchia”.

The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the State Security Sub-Directorate of the Attica Security Directorate, while at the same time an administrative investigation is being carried out into the video content reproduced on the internet.
