The delivery of 113 new patrols that are part of the fleet of Immediate Action in Attica and Thessaloniki, was attended today by the Minister of Civil Protection, Takis Theodorikakos, which took place at the premises of the Greek Police in Markopoulo. The purchase cost of the patrol cars was covered by the European Internal Security Fund.

The minister said that the new vehicles will be available for the Immediate Action of Attica and Thessaloniki, while he made special reference to the incidents of police officers who saved the woman from a certain murder in Thessaloniki and the arrests during the operation in Zefyri, but also for the 10,000 police officers who will carry out sweeping checks on holidays, for security and measures for the coronavirus.

The receipt of the new patrols took place in the presence of the General Secretary of Public Order Konstantinos Tsouvalas and the Chief of the Hellenic Police, Lieutenant General Michael Karamalakis.

Regarding the receipt of the new vehicles, Mr. Theodorikakos stated: “Today, the Greek Police receives another 113 patrols, which will be available in the Immediate Action, in the Attica basin and in Thessaloniki. They will help our police officers to do their job even better. , as has happened in recent days with the four police officers who rescued a woman at the last minute in Thessaloniki and with the arrest of eight people for drugs in Zefyri and Liossia. There are dozens of other cases across the country that prove that the Greek Police are here for the safety of all citizens “.

Regarding the measures taken during the festive period regarding the observance of the protection measures against covid- 19, the Minister of Protection, among other things, stressed: “In the coming days the security measures for the citizens will become much stronger as we approach the Christmas holidays. 10,000 police officers, men and women of the Greek Police will be here to assist in the security and, of course, precautionary measures to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. measures for the health of all of us let us observe the measures requested by the state “.

“ELAS role is crucial in the fight against the pandemic – Citizens must feel completely safe”

“81% of police officers are vaccinated or have a certificate of illness. Citizens should know that they are not at the slightest risk from the police,” said Mr. Theodorikakos, answering a topical question from the head of the department and MP of SYRIZA Christos Spirtzias about the vaccination Hellenic Police personnel.

The Minister of Citizen Protection stated that according to the data of the ELAS Headquarters, by December 2, 2020, out of the total of 56,000 police officers, 75% of the police officers are fully vaccinated. 6% have fallen ill and 3% have taken the first dose. In total, the minister said, 81% of police officers are covered, a percentage higher than the general population. He added that every day we try to convince all ELAS staff to be vaccinated and this is a method that works and does not create a problem.

Mr. Theodorikakos, noted that these data were until December 2, as ELAS considers a police officer vaccinated not only if he has done the second dose, but additionally 14 days have passed since the second dose. For all those who are not fully vaccinated, however, what is provided for everyone applies, ie to do and submit to their service two tests per week.

Citizens, he said, “should feel absolutely safe” and noted that as of today, 10,000 police officers are fighting the pandemic, asking for “the help of citizens to cope with this difficult task”.

The minister said that there are specific instructions for the police officers who carry out the inspections, ie to wear a mask, gloves, not to come in close contact with the inspected and reiterated that “the citizens should know that they are not in the slightest danger”.

He pointed out that ELAS had a critical role in the fight against the pandemic as it has carried out about 90% of the inspections.

The head of the department and MP of SYRIZA, Christos Spirtzis, stated that there is a very large number of police officers who have not been vaccinated and this is a problem for the police staff but also for the citizens with whom they come in daily contact. Unvaccinated police officers, he stressed, should not participate in checks. He asked the Minister to state how many police officers have been vaccinated, how many have become ill and how many have lost their lives to covid 19. He added that it is not possible in such a critical service and with the special duties of police officers not to be issued special circulars from the Ministry and to apply the general instructions that exist for the State.

At the very least, the MP said, it should be said that “an unvaccinated police officer should not have checks” saying that it is inconsistent for “a vaccinated citizen to be checked by an unvaccinated police officer who simply takes two rapid tests per week” and ” “Unvaccinated police officers come into contact with hundreds of thousands of people every day when we have 20,000,000 dead from the pandemic.”
